Why Should I Get Braces?

A beautiful smile is usually the most obvious benefit of wearing braces. But, there’s more than that!

After finishing with braces, most patients feel much more self-confident with their new smile.

How it works

Modern orthodontic appliances are made of various materials including metal, ceramic, and plastic. Appliances may be bonded to the teeth or removable. By putting continuous, gentle forces on the teeth in precisely controlled direction, orthodontic appliances slowly move teeth. With modern orthodontic appliances you can often choose brackets that are tooth colored or metallic, and sometimes you can choose the color of the ties that hold the wire in brackets to make your smile match your personality. Modern orthodontic wires are much less noticeable than they used to be, and these enhanced materials allow the orthodontist to move the teeth much faster and with less discomfort than ever before.

How long does treatment take

Orthodontic treatment typically takes one to three years and is dependent on the growth of the patient’s mouth and face, as well as, the severity of the issues being addressed. Growth of the face and jaws are unique for all patients and cannot always be predicted, so the duration of treatment may differ slightly from original estimates. One factor that will always impact the duration of treatment is patient compliance. The more diligent the patient is with the use of prescribed appliances, the more efficient and effective treatment will be. Occasionally, the orthodontist may recommend “interceptive” treatment in younger patients to take advantage of growth at an earlier age that may help to prevent more severe malocclusions later. For this reason, the AAO recommends that all children be evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7.
